“Education is learning what you didn't even know you didn't know.”
— American historian Daniel J. Boorstin
New to your job or need to brush up on some fundamentals? Check out our new comprehensive virtual seminars on quality, risk adjustment, and SDoH designed for experienced health care professionals, those who transferred into a new role, or individuals who are just starting out in the industry.
The RISE Bedrock of Health Care consists of three, eight-hour live-streamed seminars, spread over two days in August and January 2025, that you can join from the comfort of your home or office. The agendas, which include hands-on exercises and real-time Q&A sessions, were developed with feedback from RISE fellows, industry experts who were appointed to ensure the programs are timely and informative.
Topics will include goals of CMS and quality programs, Medicare Star ratings, fundamentals of HEDIS®, the intersection of quality and health equity, the essentials of Stars math, value-based care’s impact on CBOs, unpacking the fundamentals of the V28 model, providers’ role in risk adjustment, and RADV audit preparation.
The seminars are an important addition to RISE offerings, says RISE Fellow Melissa Smith, founder of Newton Smith Group, who will serve as an instructor for the quality program, August 13-14.
“We’re seeing an immense turnover inside of many of our health plan partners and many of our vendor partners. At the same time, we are facing more complex business problems than ever. This has led us to a deeper need for more learning and content of a deep, rich, and complicated nature to learn more than we’ve ever needed to since the launch of Medicare Advantage and Part D,” Smith says. “And we have this new community of professionals who have been often hired for their professionalism with a clear expectation that they’ll find a way to learn the technical skills and regulatory rigors in MA,” she says.

In addition to health plans and vendors, RISE Fellow Dr. Shannon Decker, principal, VBC One, says risk bearing provider groups will also find the information valuable. Decker, who will serve as an instructor for all three programs, recommends that professionals new to their roles consider attending the Bedrock sessions prior to going to three-day, in-person conferences, such as RISE West and RISE National.

“It will give them a leg up,” Decker says. “I hear from a lot of new folks to the industry that even the acronyms are just overwhelming and so attending the introductory training will give them some familiarity with the industry and they can then participate at a higher level at the in-person conferences.” Decker also suggests seasoned professionals consider attending the sessions as a refresher. “I myself like to sit in on preconference workshops offered at conferences because there are things that I either forgot or maybe never knew in the first place and so there’s gaps in my knowledge,” Decker says. “It’s helpful just to have an opportunity to revisit things.”
RISE Fellow Dr. Ellen Fink-Samnick, a wholistic health equity strategist, content developer, educator, and principal of EFS Supervision Strategies, LLC, says that the Bedrock series offers a vital understanding of underlying and rapidly shifting principles and practices that health care professionals must stay aware of to be successful in their roles. Fink-Samnick, who will serve as an instructor in the SDoH series, said the RISE virtual seminars will offer realistic, practical, and current intel for attendees that will foster their ability to be proactive rather than reactive in the health care ecosystem.

The quality seminar will be live-streamed August 13-14, 2024, and January 7-8, 2025. The SDoH training will take place August 20-21,2024, and January 14-15, 2025. Risk adjustment sessions are scheduled for August 27-28, 2024, and January 21-22, 2025. All training sessions will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 4 p.m. EST. An individual seat costs $395 per seminar and discounted rates are available for group registrations. Click here for the complete agendas, roster or speakers, and registration information.
