With a growing responsibility to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) throughout the health care industry, the two-day online seminar will deliver essential strategies to deconstruct systemic inequalities and foster an environment of social equity and community care. Join the changemaking conversation February 13-14, 2023.

The inaugural RISE Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Summit will feature timely, thought-provoking discussion curated specifically for Medicare Advantage and managed care professionals striving to promote DEI in the workplace and their communities. Throughout the virtual event, attendees will participate in eight sessions and hear from 15 esteemed speakers on how to create an inclusive culture, integrate training through mentorship and educational programs, and equitable practices for community engagement.

Here's a look at hot-button sessions on the agenda:

Insights from CMS

Three representatives from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will be attending the conference as speakers:

  • Natalia Barolin, BSN, RN, model lead for the Accountable Health Communities Model
  • Christine Ogbue, Ph.D., senior advisor
  • Dora Hughes, Ph.D., chief medical officer

Barolin and Dr. Ogbue will participate in the panel discussion, Addressing Health Care Disparities by Means of Community Engagement, where they will explore strategies to identify the communities you serve, best practices to set up a framework that encourages feedback from patients and visitors to bolster your organization’s reputation, and how to identify the unique needs and challenges your communities may encounter.

Dr. Hughes will deliver a keynote address on day two, covering how to build a foundation for systems that deliver quality health care.

Inclusionary practices

To kick off the seminar, Kevin Coleman, founder, KMC Empowerment, will share key strategies to shape an equitable workforce. Coleman will explore best practices to develop a culture of inclusion; strategies to mitigate unconscious bias via training, mediation, and more; and how microaggressions can create an unwelcoming atmosphere.

During diversity leaders roundtables, speakers will offer their considerations to integrate DEI, including how to create an equitable work environment, generate buy-in through open dialogue, and outline a roadmap to implement DEI and capture results. Timshel Tarbet, VP business excellence and diversity strategy, SCAN Health Plan, will moderate the roundtable discussions between Julianne Eckert, senior director of clinical quality programs, Clover Health, and Teresa Malcolm, system vice president of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, Dartmouth Health.

Mentorship and educational programs

In the session, Diversity and Leadership: Defining DEI Best Practices, Bahar Sedarati, medical director of clinical performance and operations, Humana, and Michael Garrett, health equity and clinical consultant, Michael Garrett Consulting, will discuss internal capacity to create a support system of guidance and counseling for employees, how to raise awareness through mentorship and educational programs, and the role of board members in relation to DEI and how the involvement of a diverse group can lead to organizational growth.

The RISE Summit on Social Determinants of Health

Equitable practices for community engagement

In a discussion around social equity and community health: a shared commitment to accessing care, Shannon Decker, principal, VBC One, and Natisha Penn, community health and planning manager, Florida Health will explore the challenges and structural barriers related to receiving care, how telehealth and alternatives to traditional care can help reduce health care inequality, and strategies to improve support systems and engaging underserved communities.

The session, The Community Investment Ecosystem: It Takes a Village!, will delve into the roadblocks to social equity and your role in removing them, how investing in DEI can build community wealth, and how increasing contributions to health equity can reduce health care costs. Speakers will include Sana Imam, operations manager, Black Directors Health Equity Agenda; Jennifer Romero, health care assistance administrative program manager, Santa Fe County; and Christa Hernandez, youth and family services program manager, Santa Fe County.
