Back by popular demand! Digital health expert Wendy Sue Swanson, M.D., a keynote speaker at RISE National 2021, has been added as the third keynote for this year’s annual conference.

She wowed attendees at our virtual event two years ago, and this year Dr. Wendy Sue Swanson will speak in person at RISE National 2023 to explain how technology can guide what health care becomes.

Dr. Swanson, a pediatrician, author of Mama Doc Medicine, and a pioneer in the use of the digital space to provide humanistic doctor-patient information, will present “Technology & Health: What’s Changing and What’s Not,” on the final day of the main conference, March 8, at The Broadmoor Resort Colorado Springs. She’ll explore what matters most with today’s challenges for humans (such as prevention of disease, COVID-19, violence, isolation, cancer, heart disease, mental health, and costs in health care) as smartphones and technology transform the way we live our lives. Dr. Swanson, who currently serves as director of digital health, professor, Sean N. Parker Center for Allergy and Asthma Research, Stanford University, will also discuss where technology cannot encroach on care. She’ll provide a way forward to improve your approach and provide examples to peak curiosity and solution-making.

A long-time advocate of digital innovation, Dr. Swanson told RISE prior to her first keynote in 2021 that although the health care industry has made great strides with using telehealth since COVID-19, there is still much to do to create a health care system that is patient-centered and provider-centered. “Of course, we have to be patient-centered in any solution that we move forward, and I think that is why digital innovation has had so many tailwinds in the last year. But we also need to be clinician-centered so that these solutions actually create efficiency and create meaning in provider work,” she said at the time.

Dr. Swanson has dedicated her career to expanding the practice of general pediatrics in part by using public communication tools and digital software to improve education, connection between patients and care teams, and public health. In 2009, she started a “mommy blog” for a hospital to combat misinformation in the news and online for families. The blog eventually led to her becoming the founder and chief of digital innovation at Seattle Children’s Hospital in 2013. She was a pioneer in using social media in medicine with a focus on increasing trust in the science and safety of immunizations. For more than a decade, she generated worldwide interest in pediatric public health topics, her team’s digital health innovation projects, and prevention solutions by leveraging her blog, social channels, and media opportunities.
