The program, now in its eighth year, will take place on April 19-20 as a virtual event for Medicaid managed care health plans, providers, and community-based organizations (CBOs). Here is an overview of the key themes and hot topics we’ll cover.

This year’s Medicaid Managed Care Leadership Summit will delve into the winding down of the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) and will provide attendees with strategies to improve clinical outcomes, succeed with value-based contracting, stay on top of regulatory changes, and address social determinants of health (SDoH). 

The virtual event will take place April 19-20 and will feature more than 20 speakers who will address the most pressing topics in Medicaid over the course of 13 sessions. Take a look at five of the planned sessions:

Keynote panel on the winding down of the COVID PHE

Nicolette E. Wise, director, social determinants of health, TennCare, State of Tennessee, will moderate the panel discussion, which will examine how states and Medicaid managed care organizations (MCOs) are handling redeterminations and the financial and operational impacts of the end of the PHE. Panelists Colby Schaeffer, chief actuary, Arizona Health Care Cost Containment Services (Medicaid), and Jim Jones, former Medicaid director for the State of Wisconsin, who is now the founder/principal of J Jones Consulting, will also suggests tips to effectively communicate with Medicaid members about redeterminations. 

Case studies in value-based contracting

During this session, MCOs and health care providers will discuss their real-life experiences with value-based contracting and offer best practices for designing successful contracts to lower costs and increase quality. Presenters include Eliza Ng, M.D., chief medical officer, Coalition of Asian-American Independent Practice Association, and Jordan Vidor, vice president, east region provider network, Elevance Health.

How to collaborate with CBOs to advance health equity

Learn how MCOs and providers collaborate with networks of CBOs through community care hubs to address health-related social needs. Speakers will include Kelly Cronin, deputy administrator, innovation and partnership, HHS Administration on Community Living; June Simmons, CEO, Partners in Care Foundation and cochair, Partnership to Align Social Care; and Kristen Scholl, vice president, strategic partnerships, Healthy Alliance. They’ll offer examples of how Medicaid 115 waivers and other funding sources are financing the work of community care hubs. Attendees will also hear about one community care hub’s experience successfully collaborating with health care payers and providers.

Effective screening for SDoH at the individual and population levels

Shannon Decker, M.Ed, MBA, Ph.D., principal, VBC One, and Beth Marootian, director, business development, Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island, will discuss techniques to identify SDoH risk in patient populations. They’ll explore how attendees can use SDoH data in program planning and population stratification. In addition, attendees will learn how providers and MCOs can effectively share SDoH information.

Policy and political analysis: The future of Medicaid

During this session, Jennifer Babcock, senior vice president for Medicaid policy, Association for Community Affiliated Plans, and Maeghan Gilmore, vice president of government affairs, Association for Behavioral Health and Wellness, will discuss how the mid-term elections will impact Medicaid managed care, how telemedicine policies could change post-COVID, and the future of federal and state policies, including drug pricing, behavioral health, and abortion.
