RISE West 2019 will feature more than 50 speakers who will showcase their success stories and strategies to improve programs for leadership, risk adjustment, documentation, HCC coding, quality, social determinants of health, RADV audits, payer-provider collaboration, and member engagement. This article highlights five speakers who are scheduled to present during the first day of the main conference on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

Richard Picciotto

The main conference will kick off on Tuesday, Sept. 10 with a keynote presentation by Richard Picciotto, FDNY chief and the highest-ranking firefighter to survive the World Trade Center collapse. Picciotto, author of the book, “Last Man Down,” will provide a gripping, firsthand account of the day that altered history and his talk will include lessons in leadership when confronted with enormous adversity.

Stephen Shapiro

You’ll also hear an “out of industry perspective on practical innovation in health care” from innovation expert Stephen Shapiro. His passion for innovation was sparked nearly 25 years ago when he worked at Accenture, a global professional services firm, where his role was to optimize businesses and make them more efficient. But he soon learned that when he trained leaders on the firm’s methodology, they would often optimize their profits and downsize employees.

“I like helping companies grow and create jobs, not shrink them, and that’s where I wanted to focus my energy,” Shapiro told RISE during a recent interview.

Amy Nguyen Howell

Amy Nguyen Howell, M.D., chief medical officer, America’s Physician Groups, will discuss payer/provider collaboration and how patient experience from the provider’s perspective aligns with payers’ goals. Howell describes herself as a proud mom and practicing family physician. She currently oversees all clinical programs at America’s Physician Groups and supports advocacy work in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. She was most recently tapped to be a member of the Technical Expert Panel (TEP) for the MACRA Measurement Development Program and the Medicare Advantage (MA) and Part D Star Ratings Program. She is also a leader on the Population Based Payment Workgroup, as part of the Healthcare Payment Learning and Action Network (LAN), recommending national guidelines for an effective population-based payment model.

Kathleen Stillo

The afternoon will feature concurrent sessions in three different tracks. Speakers will include Kathleen Stillo, president and chief operations officer, clinical redesign community & state at United Healthcare. She will present a case study of United Healthcare’s successful social determinants of health model (SDoH) called Housing + Health, which focuses on providing housing and integrated wraparound care to members who are persistent and frequent users of the health care system and are currently homeless.

“Most models are built around body parts, ours was built around people. The work is similar in many ways, but from the position of payer, the opportunity is significant. We’re impacting vulnerable patients nationwide,” Stillo told RISE during a recent interview.

Shannon Decker

Shannon Decker, Ph.D., executive director of risk, NAMM California, part of OptumCare, UnitedHealth Group, will present at two different sessions during the first day of the main conference: the first on strategies to calculate the ROI of SDoH interventions, the other on strategies to improve provider engagement.

Both topics, she told RISE, require health care leaders and organizations to truly get to know their audience, tailor a message to that audience, and craft a strategy around that message.

“A lot of times we think we know our audience and we want to speak at people rather than listen to what it takes to move them,” said Decker, who applies her learnings and research to develop programs that help patients take an active role in their health care and motivate providers to participate in programs aimed to improve patient care.
